With Halloween just around the corner, now is the time for teachers to get a little creative in the classroom and have fun with this spooktacular event! Plenty of imagination, fun and scares are required. Let your class get creative, whether it’s sharing ghoulish ghost stories or getting messy with a few arts and crafts (do you ever grow out of enjoying arts and crafts? We don’t think so!).
There are tonnes of different ways in which you can bring a little Halloween spook into the class next week, it’s the perfect post-half term activity for everyone to enjoy and get involved in.
Here, in this fun Infographic created by our friends over at Simply Education are some of our favourite ideas!
Match The Pumpkin
This is one of favourites and thankfully doesn’t require any carving from the kids (that could get a little dangerous after all…). Simply cut ten pumpkin shapes out of orange card and design five different faces, then draw each face on two pumpkins to make five matching pairs. Show the children one pumpkin face for ten seconds before taking it away, ask them to then pick the matching face from the leftover collection. This is a great memory test and you can also get the children involved in helping to design the pumpkin faces too!
Spooky Stories
It’s time to let your student’s imagination run wild with a few spooky stories! Ask your class to create their very own scary Halloween character, then suggest they write a story involving their character, what their name is, where they live, who they’re friends with and what they like to do. As an additional exercise you could also ask them to verbally describe their character to their fellow classmates and have them draw them out on a whiteboard or a piece of paper. If your class enjoys getting arty then why not spend the afternoon having them make their own character out of paper, pom poms, cotton wool buds and so on to make it more interactive!
Creepy Crafts
A real favourite with the children, and the opportunity to make something to take home and proudly display on October 31st! Have the class make their own paper pumpkins or why not try something different and create some unicorn fluff. Yes, you heard right! Unicorn fluff is fun and really easy to make, it’s also great for the children who might not enjoy the spookier halloween characters. This is a soft and fluffy sensory treat for the class which requires minimal materials. Simply mix 1/2 cup of thick shampoo with 1/4 cup of cornstarch and a food colouring of your choice (we think pink, turquoise or purple works best!). After this add six tablespoons of water and stir them in one by one, and finally add some glitter to give it plenty of unicorn sparkle! If your mixture appears a little runny then just add extra cornstarch until the consistency thickens and feels squishy. The kids will love the feel of it plus it’s a new and interesting activity for them to enjoy.
Hopefully these ideas will help you to plan a few activities to enjoy on Monday with your class, it will certainly make it a halloween to remember!
