I’m a Home Expert – Here’s How to Maximise Your Living Room Space Like a Pro…

With Google searches for ‘how to make a small living room look bigger’ surging by 5,000% in the past 30-days, St. Modwen Homes, and its interior expert have provided valuable insight into how to maximise the space in your family room.

Alison MacLean, who looks after the show homes at St. Modwen Homes, comments:

“Maximising the space in your family room to make it appear bigger is all about smart design choices. To start, I’d recommend beginning with a light colour palette. This tried and trusty technique encourages you to embrace light, neutral colours on the walls and furniture to help create an airy feel – allowing your space to instantly look more open. To emphasise that ‘open’ appearance, accessories such as mirrors are also your best friend! For example, if you strategically place a large mirror directly opposite a window, it’ll give the illusion of depth to your room.

“Furniture styles are also key when it comes to maximising space. Opt for multi-functional pieces like a sofa with hidden storage or a coffee table that doubles as an ottoman – to keep clutter at bay (and hidden!) and save space. Another important tip is to keep your furniture scaled to the room, as oversized pieces can make the space feel cramped and chaotic. When arranging your furniture, try to create a clear pathway if you can, as this will help make the room feel more spacious – clever furniture placement truly works wonders on the eye.

“And finally, don’t forget about vertical space! I’d recommend using tall bookcases or shelves to draw the eye upwards, making the ceiling feel higher. This can also be done with large artwork, vertical lighting and even through paint.

“By following these simple design tips, you’ll be able to create a family room that feels much larger and even more inviting.”
