7 ways to add Italian charm to your garden this summer

It’s clear the first signs of sunshine have got us excited for outdoor living again, with searches for ‘Italian gardens’ rising by +43% on Pinterest. March is the perfect time to get started on those garden renovation plans. And what could be better than an Italian-themed garden, ready for sipping Aperols in the sun? With summer on the horizon, we spoke with Steven Walley, garden design expert at London Stone, who has shared how to renovate your garden with a touch of the Mediterranean…

1. Choose your patio tiles

To truly transport you to a Mediterranean garden, first consider the foundation of your garden – your patio. “To replicate a Mediterranean feel in your garden, opt for patio tiles that capture the rustic warmth of outdoor spaces in hot climates.” Steven advises. “Porcelain tiles or natural stone are great options for this, as they bring an authentic touch to garden schemes while being durable and easy to maintain.

“Choose patio tiles in creamy neutrals, light greys and warm terracottas to reflect the traditional courtyards of Tuscany and the Amalfi coast.

“For example, our Antique Yellow Limestone has a natural golden tone, perfect for adding a rustic, elegant touch to garden schemes.

“Alternatively, our Florence Beige Porcelain tiles are a durable, low-maintenance option that emulates the rich warmth of natural limestone, great for adding a modern touch to Italian style.

“Plus, these shades pair perfectly with vibrant green planters, helping to bring these to life.” He says.

2. Play with tile patterns

Steven says: “The layout of your patio tiles is just as important as the design and material.

“To replicate the charm of Italian streets, consider using a Patio Pack mix of rectangular and square tiles to create an Opus Romano pattern.

“Alternatively, choose large-format slabs to create a clean, seamless effect that is reminiscent of grand Italian villa terraces.

“To soften the transition between paving and borders, use gravel or cobbled edging to help create a natural flow. This will help to prevent paving from looking too stark against greenery. Plus, this helps to support drainage in your garden too.

“Remember to choose gravel in shades that complement your patio paving for a cohesive look.”

3. Bring in colour

European gardens embrace vibrant colours through foliage and plants that thrive in warm climates. However, there are ways you can bring colour in without the sunshine all year round…

“Add mosaic tiles to give a decorative touch to borders. These are perfect for adding an accent to pathways while bringing in a splash of colour – a great substitute for exotic flowers.

“Consider painting an exterior wall in your garden to create a backdrop of colour, perfect for zoning an outdoor dining area.

“To elevate your patio further, add potted citrus trees in terracotta planters to add vibrant colour and fragrance to your garden. Choose pots and planters in an array of hues in cool neutrals, blues and light greens to add the feel of the Med to your space.”

4. Plant aromatic herbs

Fragrant herbs and luscious greenery on your patio can help to create the effect of a Mediterranean garden. “Consider planting herbs such as rosemary, lavender and thyme and place them in terracotta pots on your patio garden for a rustic, Tuscan feel.

“Place herbs next to your seating areas to scent your garden, positioning  lavender in full view of the sun as this will help to draw out the oils in the foliage, giving out a lovely fragrance.

“Rosemary is a great plant for cascading over garden walls, helping to soften hard landscaping features of your garden such as pathways, patios, fences or walls.” Steven advises.

5. Zone a space for alfresco dining

No Italian-inspired garden is complete without a dedicated alfresco dining area.

“Start by choosing the best location for your dining space, positioning it to make the most of garden views or where the afternoon and evening sun hits it. If you can, place dining tables near fragrant herbs to add a scent to your space.

“Opt for a rustic wooden table to replicate the charm of traditional Italian courtyards and pair with wicker or rattan chairs add an earthy, natural touch to complement neutral stone paving.

“To elevate your tablescape, handpick flowers from your garden—think olive branches or fresh herbs to create a laid-back yet elegant Mediterranean atmosphere. Pair with linen napkins, ceramic tableware, and flickering candle lanterns for an authentic Italian holiday feel.”

6. Add decorative touches

To add warmth into your garden, bring in small decorative touches to create a cosy feel.

“Layer outdoor rugs onto your patio or paving stones to create a cosy seating area while adding warmth under-foot.

“Choose a rug that complements your existing garden furniture and outdoor tiles to co-ordinate with your garden scheme.

“Adding details such as a water feature can help to bring in a Mediterranean feel to your garden and act as a focal point too. Choose one made of light stone or warm terracotta to add that European feel.”

7. Add ambience with outdoor lighting

To complete your garden, add lighting to illuminate features and bring the space to life after dark.

“Add lanterns around social spaces or lantern-style wall sconces for a vintage Italian feel. Pair with string lights around your table to illuminate dining spaces after dark.

“Solar lighting is a great way to brighten pathways in the evening while creating a warm, inviting atmosphere to your space.”

“Fire pits or outdoor fireplaces are also a great way to create a cosy, year-round spot for socialising.”
