You may very well love your job but even for the most passionate workers, being back at work after Christmas can feel like a drain. So we don’t blame you if you’re already day dreaming about getting on a plane to get away from the daily grind.
This new year, the most popular gay-friendly destinations offer holidaymakers the chance to kick back and relax with like-minded souls in a safe environment. Whether you’re looking to party, or simply enjoy some downtime there are a number of destinations popular with the LGBT community. Some are well known and established while others are growing in popularity. But with so many options available, choosing where to go can be a challenge. Here’s a list of recommended places to consider:
Ibiza
If you’re after luxury accommodation, lavish nightlife and tranquil beaches then look no further than Ibiza. It’s no wonder so many flock to this Mediterranean island. With its pleasant temperature and year-long party atmosphere it really is a great place for a lively holiday. Many of the large nightclubs host LGBT events and parties throughout the year, with Ibiza Pride being the biggest event in the calendar. Expect huge concerts, large parties and a Pride march called The Grand Parade. With so much to do, an Ibiza travel guide is a must – you don’t want to miss out on anything.
Mykonos
As one of the big four LGBT-friendly destinations to visit in Europe, it’s no surprise that Mykonos features on this list. With its relaxing hotels, beaches and thriving nightlife it has become an LGBT favourite. On top of this, some of the best music artists from the LGBT scene can be found performing here at the annual XLSIOR music festival. The festival slogan talks of people from all over the world ‘connected by love and the universal language of music’ and can be enjoyed in the beautiful outdoors.
Reykjavik, Iceland
Potentially not one of the first destinations you think of, but the Icelandic capital Reykjavik has a flourishing LGBT scene. Alongside striking volcanoes, raging waterfalls and hot-water springs, you can find top gay bars like Kiki Queer Bar and a not-to-be-missed Pride in August. Roll this up with friendly Icelandic hospitality and inspiring street art and you’ve got yourself an LGBT-friendly holiday you won’t forget.
Sitges
Located in Catalonia, just south-west of Barcelona is this picturesque coastal town. Sitges is arguably most famous for its beautiful Mediterranean beaches, but there’s plenty more to the town. Sitges comes alive at night with a bustling LGBT scene that rivals bigger cities nearby. Popular events include the annual Gay Pride Sitges which has a custom-built miniature village with lots of places to eat, drink and party all day and night.
Gran Canaria
The LGBT scene in Gran Canaria is always alive and kicking, from Carnival in February and March to Gay Pride in May. Gran Canaria is a holiday destination where sun, sea, sand and all-night partying come as standard. It’s also home to Yumbo Centrum, a favourite hangout spot for LGBT travellers where you can shop during the day and party the night away under rainbow flags. There are also lots of other LGBT-friendly bars and clubs close by, so you’re never far away from a party.
From Reykjavik to Gran Canaria, these holiday destinations are a perfect choice for an unforgettable holiday full of gay-friendly events, music festivals and bars. The difficult part is trying to choose where to visit next.
