A journey couldn’t be characterized as a comfortable and enjoyable one, if severe disruptions take place. In this case we are not referring to travel-related circumstances as a mediocre accommodation or a missed bus, rather than to our own health.
One of the most sensitive body parts, that can be easily impacted from the very fact of the change of location, is our eyes. As important for the successful completion of daily activities, irritation and infections are likely to reduce greatly the level of our travelling experience. Therefore, it is crucial to take care of them properly, in all moments, even if the procedure demands higher effort while travelling.
Here’s what you can do to enhance your eye-health on an every-day basis!
1. Prevention saves eyes!
To start with, it is critical to mention that all tips and advices following, are significant, though can not substitute official medical intervention, in cases that is inevitable, or when medical history and eye conditions are already existent. So, firstly find an ophthalmologist to conduct your annual eye check-up, and ask for exclusive suggestions on how to avoid further inconveniences.
2. Avoid eye tiredness
Our work life and its high demanding on screen time, as well as the extended use of our smartphones, cause eye strain. Take advantage of your days off, applying also a phone and social-media detox, giving your sight the chance to rest and reducing the risks of early vision problems.
A very helpful tool to this effort, is the 20-20-20 technique. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and focus on something at least 20 feet away.
Finally, when using, if necessary, screens, make sure the lighting conditions opt for your comfort, and consider using blue light glasses.
3. Protection & Hydration
Another step of maintaining your eyesight as much intact as possible, is to not expose your eyes to harmful or low-level hygiene situations. In particular, this means, that if you use contact lenses, it’s recommended to have a spare pair with you, as well as physical glasses, in the unfortunate case of irritations. Also, do not forget packing and wearing your sunglasses, preferably with protection to both UVA and UVB rays, even during the hours when sunlight is not unbearable intense, and googles if using the swimming pool.
Additionally, you should keep in mind that dry eyes are not healthy eyes. Their hydration is directly related with the overall hydration level of our organism, therefore drinking plenty of water -and getting enough sleep – are the most critical points. Although, new environments as well as the airplane cabin, are not the biggest against eye-dryness. That’s when preservative-free artificial tears, can be used to lubricate your eyes and remove potentially harmful particles.
