Premium Espresso Bar Group Hagen Announces International Expansion with First Amsterdam Opening
Hagen, a Danish brand born in London, known for its sleek Scandinavian design and love for their exceptional quality and sustainable approach is now expanding beyond the English Channel with a grand Amsterdam opening.
Premium Danish coffee brand Hagen has announced the brand’s expansion into Europe with multiple international openings planned for 2025. Marking the next step in their mission to bring people together over the highest quality coffee with a sophisticated Scandinavian ambiance, Hagen has now opened their first espresso bar in Amsterdam in March in the city’s central district (Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen).
Hagen has seen significant growth in the UK market, with 17 espresso bars in London’s most desirable postcodes, including their concept bar in North Audley Street Mayfair which opened at the end of 2024. This has been driven, according to founder Tim Schroeder, by the brand’s premium positioning paired with a truly sustainable ethos.
Tim said: ‘I founded Hagen to create a Danish coffee experience anchored in the premium end of the market. But in my mind it’s not enough to be premium – we have to give back to the communities we touch and do something that’s real. This somewhat uncommercial approach earned us customer loyalty and helped us to grow. We are looking forward to bringing this to Amsterdam – a city with a fantastic cafe culture, quality and craftsmanship – that loves bikes and windmills as much as we do in Copenhagen.’
As with Hagen’s London espresso bars, premium interior design will be a core part of the experience in Amsterdam – creating the Danish Kaffe Experience. Seating is intentionally limited, with the focal point instead being around the green marble counter, which is designed to encourage a communal atmosphere centred around the performance of their skilled baristas in a similar vein to high-end sushi and cocktail bars. The bar is equipped with one of the best manual coffee machines in the world – Kees Van Der Westen – a boutique, design focused manufacturer based just outside Eindhoven and a staple at Hagen.
In true Danish exploratory tradition, Hagen finds the best single origin coffees from around the world to bring to their bars, including their own Himalayan Speciality Coffee Project, which grows sustainable coffee, from Eastern Nepal and supports a community of over 1,000 coffee farmers in the Taplejung district through direct trade. Taplejung is perfectly suited for growing speciality coffee, with its rich soil and high-altitude conditions ideal for cultivating unique flavour profiles. Hagen’s Nepal coffee is eco-roasted using Bellwether system, the world’s lowest carbon coffee roaster, reducing carbon footprint by up to 90%.
