Younger Generations are at the Forefront of the Tablescaping Trend
Whether it’s an intimate supper with friends or a big family gathering, dinner parties are firmly back on the social calendar – and we have teamed up with M&S to help hosts do it in style. According to the World Happiness Report 2025, sharing meals is one of the strongest drivers of happiness worldwide. So, to help people host with confidence and joy, M&S commissioned a survey of over 2,000 people to uncover what makes the perfect dinner party – and homeware can help create the ultimate setting.

Dinner party essentials
When it comes to being the perfect host, there are certain non-negotiables. A clean and tidy space and the perfect food and drink spread top the list. But 40% of Brits also say creating the right ambience and atmosphere is key.
Younger generations are at the forefront of the tablescaping trend, with 27% of 25–34-year-olds and 24% of 18–24-year-olds considering table décor a must-have – compared to just 20% of the general population. For hosts looking to elevate their table this spring, M&S’s range of elegant dinnerware sets, stylish glassware, and seasonal table linens provide effortless inspiration.
“We’re seeing customers really lean into creating a sense of occasion at home,” says Karen Thomas, head of homeware design. “Whether that’s layering textures and colours with playful cabbageware, boho chic picnicware or channelling Italian summer vibes with Amalfi-inspired ceramics, tablescaping has become an expression of personality and a huge part of the fun of hosting.”

Planning makes perfect
Brits are nothing if not organised. Nearly nine in ten (89%) plan their dinner parties at least a week in advance. Those aged 25–34 are the most meticulous planners, with one in five (21%) organising a month ahead, compared to 17% of the general population.
“Planning ahead makes all the difference,” adds Karen. “A menu with dishes you can prepare in advance, thoughtful table styling and small finishing touches like fresh florals or ambient lighting means you’ll spend more time enjoying the evening with your guests.”

The challenges of hosting
However, even the most seasoned hosts have their challenges. The survey revealed that the most difficult part of hosting for Brits is managing time and logistics (27%), closely followed by planning the menu (24%).
Interestingly, Gen Z (18-24 year olds) respondents admitted they struggle most with keeping guests entertained (20%) compared to the general population (10%), highlighting a demand for more than just great food.
“You don’t need to overcomplicate entertainment,” says Karen. “A curated playlist, a fun conversation-starter or a simple activity can help keep the energy flowing if the evening needs a lift.”

How often are Brits hosting?
- Londoners host or attend the most dinner parties. 28% host once a month and 14% once a week.
- Across the board, those aged 25–34 are most sociable, with 7% hosting or attending dinner parties more than once a week.
“We’re seeing a real shift towards more frequent, informal hosting,” says Karen. “Staying in has become just as exciting as going out – and with the right pieces and planning, it can feel just as special.”
Top tips for hosting in style
- Start planning at least a week in advance to give yourself plenty of time for menu prep and table styling.
- Don’t underestimate the power of scent. 28% of 25–34-year-olds said choosing the right room fragrance was non-negotiable. Consider a diffuser or candle to set the mood.
- Elevate your tablescape with layering. Use a textured tablecloth and elegant dinnerware to create an inviting atmosphere. Dinner candles and fresh flowers can be used to add height.
- If the weather allows, take the party outside. A few soft throws, outdoor lanterns, and a beautifully laid garden table can turn a simple alfresco gathering into something memorable. M&S has a plethora of picnicware to make the most of those sunny days.
