The Ideal Date for Families to Deck the Halls This Christmas!

Exciting news for holiday enthusiasts! A recent study has pinpointed the ideal date for families to deck the halls this Christmas.

The festive season is well and truly upon us, which means households across the country (and families around the globe!) will be debating when is appropriate to put up the Christmas tree – a task made much trickier for parents trying to manage excitement.

Putting the Christmas tree up is often the first signal to children that the big day is around the corner, as most parents let their children join in. However, finding the perfect date to decorate can be difficult due to how time-consuming it is, especially for the majority who admit to redecorating after their child’s attempt.

To take away the guess work, JoJo Maman Bébé has analysed Google search data, surveyed parents themselves and taken school holidays into account to figure out the perfect day to decorate the tree this year.

According to the study, UK Google searches for ‘when to put up a Christmas tree’ peaked on the 26th of November last year, falling just short of advent this year, which will be on the 1st of December. The study found that over four in five (84%) prefer weekend decorating, indicating that the best day to decorate this year would be Saturday the 30th of November or Sunday the 1st of December.

Another factor to consider is the shelf life of a real tree which typically lasts between four to five weeks. Decorating on this date would allow enough time to ensure it lasts until after Christmas. Schools in the UK will typically break up on the 20th of December this year, meaning children will have three weeks to enjoy the festivities before the school holidays begin.

To shine a light on why it’s important for parents to include their children in the decorating process, JoJo Maman Bébé has teamed up with psychologist Mairead Molloy to explain the positive impact of maintaining traditions and how to make the occasion extra special.

Involving children in the decorating process encourages creative expression

“Including children in the magic and excitement of decorating the Christmas tree not only strengthens family bonds but also encourages their creativity and personal expression. It allows them to take part in cherished traditions, where they will feel a sense of belonging and build lasting memories that will stay with them throughout their lives.”

Make the task special by keeping traditions consistent

“Parents can make the process more special by creating personal traditions, such as playing festive music, sharing stories about ornaments from past Christmases, or sipping hot chocolate together. Allowing each child to choose or create their own ornament adds a personal touch, making the tree uniquely theirs. Keeping the atmosphere light and joyful, with laughter and moments of togetherness, transforms the simple act of decorating into a magical family ritual.

“Keeping the process the same each year creates a sense of continuity and stability, but, adding small variations, such as introducing new ornaments or a new activity, can keep the tradition fresh and exciting. Familiar rituals bring comfort, but a little change can add a touch of magic.”

Allow children the freedom to decorate

“When it comes to placing decorations on the tree, gently guiding children while allowing them freedom will allow them to feel involved without overwhelming them. Let them choose a few special spots to encourage creativity. If they are younger, guide them a little to ensure their safety.

“What truly makes the moment special is the presence of family coming together. Whether it’s a tradition held on the first weekend of December or a spontaneous evening filled with laughter, the magic lies in the shared experience.”
